U.S. Unveils Most Expensive Embassy in London

Times of London

The State Department sought to play down the cost of security measures, noting the expense of London building work. But the price puts the London embassy above the U.S.'s most fortified missions.

The United States unveiled plans Tuesday for its new $1 billion high-security embassy in London — the most expensive it has ever built.

The proposals were met with relief from both the present embassy's Mayfair neighbors and the residents and developers of the Battersea wasteland where the vast crystalline cube, surrounded by a moat, will be built.

The decision to abandon the former site in Grosvenor Square by 2016 came after a prolonged battle with residents angered by the security measures demanded after the September 11 attacks. More than a hundred residents took out a full-page advertisement in The Times of London to oppose tighter measures that they said would leave the area more vulnerable to attack.

The new embassy, on a former industrial site behind Battersea power station known for its gay clubs, will be designed by Kieran Timberlake, the Philadelphia architect.

A moat 100-foot -wide and rolling parkland will separate the building from the main road, protecting it from would-be bombers and removing the need for the blast barriers that so dismayed the people of Mayfair.

The State Department sought to play down the cost of security measures, noting the expense of London building work. But the price puts the London embassy above the U.S.'s most fortified missions, including the Baghdad embassy, which cost $600 million but required a further $100 million of work on air conditioning, and the Islamabad embassy, still under construction, which has cost more than $850 million.

    • Doesn't mean anything, it's a number, that's it. Money is a made up thing, just like your national debt.

    • agree, the word 'billion' has become so overused .. I found this somewhere on the interwebs.

      A BILLION

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether
you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. More..

  • That screams "Come bomb me." Especially being in the UK.

....and they slowly siphoned off the people's money to create a new oligarchy in their name.

  • Aren't you supposed to tighten your belt when your debt is reaching critical mass? Throw another billion on the fire....

    • That would have been good advice for the Shrub three years ago but I doubt he would have taken it anyway.

    • Untrue. While Bush and Repubs from 2000 to 2006 were grossly irresponsible with the deficit, Dems from 06 to 08 spent roughly the same deficit. Obama, in his first year, spent 2.8 Bush years and is projecting to blow it up more, faster and harder. The dollar declined by roughly 15% of its value last year - an astonishing number. Trying to put it all on Bush just ain't so.

    • Isn't most of that deficit you speak of TARP generated. You know, the bailout money needed to try and correct the fallout from republican fiscal polices the previous eight years. Funny how the TARP program originated during the Bush administration but mostly spent the last year so I guess by default, it's Obamas fault. Convenient logic.

    • No, you're wrong, the projected deficits are much larger. You're also wrong because dems controlled house and senate the past 3 years, so saying all past 8 years were all Bush is just not true. As you can see from my comment, I spread the blame for those 8.

Here's a nice graph from The Heritage Foundation proving my point:

Actually, I think I'll upload that one.

  • Only a government would spend 100 million on air conditioning...I had a building twice that size done for only 3,200,000.
Our leaders waste so fucking much money...Too bad the country will be completely bankrupt before anyone tried to stop it...
