John Wayne: Hyphen

The Hyphen, Webster's Dictionary defines,
Is a symbol used to divide a
compound word or a single word.
So it seems to me that when a man calls himself
An "Afro-American," a "Mexican-American,"
"Italian-American," An "Irish-American,"
"Jewish-American,"
What he's sayin' is, "I'm a divided American."

Well, we all came from other places,
Different creeds and different races,
To form a nation...to become as one,
Yet look at the harm a line has done-
A simple little line, and yet
As divisive as a line can get.
A crooked cross the Nazis flew,
And the Russian hammer and sickle too-
Time bombs in the lives of Man;
But none of these could ever fan
The fames of hatred faster than
The Hyphen.

The Russian hammer built a wall
That locks men's hearts from freedom's call.
A crooked cross flew overhead
Above twenty million tragic dead-
Among them men from this great nation,
Who died for freedom's preservation.
A hyphen is a line that's small;
It can be a bridge or be a wall.
A bridge can save you lots of time;
A wall you always have to climb.
The road to liberty lies true.
The Hyphen's use is up to you.

Used as a bridge, it can span
All the differences of Man.
Being free in mind and soul
Should be our most important goal.
If you use The Hyphen as a wall,
You'll make your life mean...and small.
An American is a special breed,
Whose people came to her in need.
They came to her that they might find
A world where they'd have peace of mind.
Where men are equal...and something more-
Stand taller than they stood before.

So you be wise in your decision,
And that little line won't cause division.
Let's join hands with one another...
For in this land, each man's your brother.
United we stand...divided we fall.
WE'RE AMERICANS...and that says it all.

  • The refusal to assimilate is their own downfall. In the USA you have to give up your fundamental culture and adopt a unified mongrel culture.

  • Controversial statements to Playboy magazine...
    ************************************************
---In an interview with Playboy magazine published on May 1, 1971, Wayne made several controversial remarks about race and class in the United States. The interview became a hot topic and many stores had trouble keeping the issue in stock. He noted that, as someone living in the 20th century, he was not responsible for the way people who lived one hundred years before him had treated Native Americans More..

    • The Duke was one of those REAL AMERICANS. Wish we had more like him today. Sure is refreshing to hear public figures speak so PRO-AMERICAN.

The unique and singular beauty of America is that we are not a single race, creed, or color. Ours is a shared value system. Rugged individualism, property rights, intellectual property rights, freedom of speech and religion, and the right to assemble we are raised on these basic inalienable human freedoms. We assume these freedoms like we assume the very a More..

  • This whole monologue is the antithesis of the American Patriot. It's a lie. America has always had a hyphen from the first day Europeans set foot on its land. The hyphen is the entire reason for a democratic government in the first place. The hyphen exists, it will always exist and the only way the government will work with the hyphen is if everyone can come to terms that the hyphen exists, and the government was designed to address it. Drop the sappy bullshit please. The patriotic attitude i More..

  • I have been doing a great deal of geneology recently. I discovered that my ancestors, for the most part, came from the British Iles, Germany and maybe soemwhere else. I suspect some melungeon on my ol' man's side. I looked continue to search for Native American. I see this as a noble race. But I see and understand what it took to make this country for all of its flaws. There was a lot of shit in the US history one would like to forget but can't and shouldn't. Most of all, we need to stand up for More..

  • Wayne claimed in his Playboy interview to have been a socialist during his years at college, and he admitted voting for Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1936 presidential election. In the same interview he also expressed admiration for Democratic President Harry S Truman.[24]

  • USA Failed. Thats why US discriminate race by colours. White, Brown, Black, Yellow. And if you are not sure call him "coloured".

Ever heard of EUropean-American? No? But you heard of Asian-American, Latino-American and African-American. White folks create terms to put minority race down.

    • Ever heard of German-American or Japanese-American--during WWII? Many of us were put in internment camps in the US.

America did this to protect itself, because some of our folks were spies, and America was not sure which ones for certain, so many were put in camps to protect America and Americans. Well, things worked out and we are all citizens of the country we wanted so much to be a part of. WE ARE AMERICANS and part of the best country in the world.

Now, if we still had thick German or Jap More..
