And to think: this video only shows the actual production end. Somewhere there was an office building with hundreds of engineers and draftsmen doing slide rule calculations and producing hundreds of thousands of drawings with T-Squares, compasses, triangles, and pencils designing that machine.

thanks Ninja', it's awesomely hard work isn't it, look at the guys rolling and forming the 3 shaped boiler plate in that massive press and the riveters in action not to mention the men on the hammers forging the driving rods, they must have had arms and hands like hammers themselves, phenomenally strong men with strong characters, you can do little but respect these old craftsmen.

@thecleaner001 I believe they all had a sense of purpose that united them and gave the project a driving force of its own, there was no need for an underboss to watch for slackers, the work they did gave the men, even at the humblest occupation, a sense of achievement which is one key component of happiness.
When the loco was completed they all could look at it and think they had a hand in this gigantic work of art.

@khamomil Good point. There was something tangible in the end result. I think we have lost that today. We have an aimlessness, a lack of galvanizing, uniting motivation. We are listless and confused. We don't really understand how we got to this point and we don't have a clear idea how to get out of it.

Great video with pride and awe for the beast they made.
Nowadays the nimbys and other groups would claim at least half the time of such a movie.

I even notice some rickety looking scaffolding they were running around on that would scare a pansy like me to just stand still on.

Oh man, those giant pounding tools. Can you imagine what that must have been like to work in those conditions without any ear protection? Did they do a finger count at the end of the shift? Holy crap.

And there was one guy holding a piece of steel to sheer the end off of that giant push rod when that giant press came down. I wonder how many arms were broken by that machine?
