I was under the impression that you were able to hear incoming artillery shells as a loud whistle just before they hit. Am I wrong? Is it just a Hollywood legend?

1.) It depends on the shell. Bigger shells make more noise as they displace the air around them.
2.) If the shell is falling directly above you, you will not hear it. The shell is moving too fast and the sound is resonating in the wrong direction (not straight down), so you're fucked.
I remember speaking to a WWII vet a few years ago. He said the only thing scarier than hearing artillery shells whistling towards you...is not hearing them at all.
