SMS Schleswig-Holstein fires Germany's first shots of WWII: Danzig, September 1st, 1939
Schleswig-Holstein entered Danzig for a 'ceremonial' visit, & was craftily moored near the Westerplatte fortress, which contained Danzig's Polish Army garrison.
Early on September 1st 1939 she began pounding the fortress and port installations.
She also put ashore a force of marines, who began assaulting the fortress.
The Poles held out for six days.
