On a side note, hasn't he heard of this thing called a razor? Although my personal choice is a properly sharpened camping knife, that's what I used last time. If you know how to shave with a straight razor, you know how to shave with a knife. The advantage of a knife is - no clogging and it clears a huge area in each pass. You could use a straight razor but chances are you'll damage the blade if you're self-shaving your back.
