This video still didn't explain to me why laser goggles are mandatory.

@swdgr
Because there are lasers aplenty that can blind or at least cause severe damage to your eyes before your blink reflex even kicks in.

As a kid I had a small 1mw Helium neon laser, I was very careful with it. Today's kids get their hands on 1-watt 445nm diodes and modules online that can easily burn. My point, they are not interested in learning about light, physics, optics, it's all about power & danger. I think anyone wanting these diodes should follow a mandatory safety course.

@briands2212 Agree entirely, while i do enjoy the high powered lasers, I mostly enjoy building them and designing more efficient drivers and heat sinks, manufacturing custom hosts and experimenting with the end product. I have a lock out on my door that disconnects the power supply when the door is open to eliminate the risk of my room mate opening the door and getting a face full of 3 watt laser.

@Loldongz It is simply a high powerd laser reflecting off a black surface, all of what you are seeing on camera is enhanced ultra violet and is not visible to the human eye, any uneducated person would want to watch the black surface melt, but would inadvertantly be putting there eyes right in the path of purple death and perminent eye injury, best part is you would only need to expose yourself for a period of time so short that your blink reflex could not save you to do perminent damage, also t More..

@JohnMcLane2008 This is a project laser, my most expensive 445nm laser. sum of all parts was about $900 excluding the host that i took from a broken laser.
Its output is 2.85 watts at 445 nm continous, its duty cycle is 100% so i can use it for as long as needed with out damage,
