Daytona 500 Crash - Jet-Fuel Fire - Juan Pablo Montoya

Juan Pablo Montoya
was alone on the race track trying to catch the rest of the field under
caution when something appeared to break on his No. 42 Chevrolet,
sending him skidding into the back of a maintenance truck equipped with a
jet-powered dryer.The crash ruptured a tank
filled with jet fuel, which burned wildly for several minutes before
safety workers could put down the flames.Montoya
was not seriously injured, nor was the driver of the jet dryer, who was
not identified. The truck driver was taken to nearby Halifax Health
Medical Center for observation. The fire may have damaged the asphalt and Safer barrier enough to force an end of the race. There was no immediate word
from NASCAR on the condition of the track or the barrier. Dave Blaney was leading the race at the time of the red-flag incident, which occurred with 160 laps complete.Montoya
said something in the transmission or rear end broke on his car,
sending him into a skid. His car's driver's side struck the jet dryer in
the rear."It just started vibrating through all of the gears," Montoya said over his radio. "Look at the back of the car."
