Heli crashes near Copacabana beach
12/29/12 : A federal fire departement helicopter crashes at the famous Copacabana beach in Brazil and sinks.
All crew members were saved. It's believed that an engine failure caused the crash.

Autorotation ftw
Change the pitch of the blades, allow for the blades to spin while falling, which slows you down AND since the hydraulic pump is connected to the tranny they will have hydraulic power. On top of that the tail rotor is attached as well so they will still have torque control for the most part.

Too low and not enough speed to do a proper auto rotation. A sketchy hover auto is all you could pull out of something like that. Also, there is no torque effect on an auto rotation because the blades are not connected to the engine, so the tail rotor is just there to look good.

@kjroberts03 The blades are connected to the transmission, the tail rotor is connected to the transmission. During autorotation the blades turn the transmission which turns the tailrotor and turns the pump for hydraulics thus providing hydraulics as well.
Engine is still connected, but through a 1 way bearing. So when the rotor turns the engine doesn't.

Oh no I didn't mean that the tail rotor just goes off and does it's own thing. I know that it's linked to the main rotor.
And engine is still connected, but the freewheeling unit lets them spin independently.
