The government has blocked transmissions of private news channels in several cities and cut telephone services in Islamabad.

Police surrounded the Supreme Court, ahead of a crucial decision on whether Musharraf could stand in elections while still head of the army.

The Chief Justice was once again dismissed.

President Musharraf is expected to address the nation in the next few hours.
