Snowmobile video shot in B.C. shows what not to do in the backcountry

The video is being used by the Canadian Avalanche Centre as an example of just how dangerous it can be to ignore the advice of avalanche experts.

It shows a lone snowmobiler climbing a steep slope near Valemount. Just as the snowmobile nears the crest of the hill, a massive slab of snow breaks away and the avalanche begins.

The rider somehow manages to ride out at the bottom of the hill, but John Kelly, CAC operations manager, said in a release things easily could have turned fatal.

The number of snowmobilers killed in avalanches this season is double the worst season on record.

Of the 24 avalanche fatalities this year, 18 have been snowmobilers.

All but one of the fatal accidents this year have been in B.C.

Video shot April 4th, 2009 around 2:30pm
