In response to all the question why to do it.
1) I dont live in the USA where you can buy hollow points even in the porn cinema, this type of ammunition is exclusive of Police and SWAT teams around here.
2) no, the lead and copper are soft metals, they dont heat up much in this type of operations.
3) yes, I know it had limitations but is better than shooting FMJs.

@Panzerknacker2 Ok I can accept that the the softer metals don't heat up much.
Still....can you touch the shell right after you finish carving it?

@Enwon Geegeefor Yes, I can, all non-ferrous metals dont heat up much when machined.

Why does this seem like a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY bad idea?
Ya know...friction creating heat and all...

I'd like to see what the homemade ones do in ballistic gel. It's always fun to see someone trying something different but I'll be sticking with my Ranger ammo for my SD guns.

Very dangerous. You can also use a sharp file to create a cross pattern.

Seems a gambit to do it with a live round. Cool lathe though.

Modified: i didn't see that they were banned in your country. Good thinking.
I guess I don't understand this. Why not just go to the store and buy hollow-points or buy hollow-point bullets and reload your own? Speer Gold Dots, my preferred carry bullet, are not just bullets drilled out. Also, if you buy ammunition from a reputable full power manufacturer like Underwood then you'll get much better velocities AND a superior defense bullet at the same time.
While I'm sure your hollow-p More..

Neat, but you know that you can buy hollow points, right?
Those won't work as well as commercial HP because they lack the lines that allow the metal to peel back predictably.

Agree.
But in support of this post, knowing how, will be a valuable skill when you can no longer purchase this ammo.

When I was younger I pulled a .22 bullet out of it's case to get the powder. i noticed there was some bluish stuff at the bottom of the shell so i took a paper clip to try and scrape it out...POP!!! WTF? Oh, I see. That day I learned how rimfire bullets work.

I use to make a small hole in my 45-70 Government bullets and glued a small pistol primer in the hole
Lots of fun

And then the primer ignites and shoots you where the sun don't shine.
