Big Tex fire at Texas State Fair
For the past 60 years, visitors to the Texas State Fair in Dallas have been welcomed with a friendly wave and a "Howdy folks" from an iconic 50 foot tall statue named Big Tex. But on Oct. 19, 2012, an apparent electrical fire caused Big Tex's head to catch on fire, which quickly spread to his Dickies. He was pronounced dead by the Dallas Fire Department at 10:30 AM.
Sorry it's "skinny" video, but it was the best I could find since it just happened. I also included the DFD dispatch audio, which is pretty funny.

@KutKorners People are already leaving flowers and wreaths at the site. I can't tell if it's a joke or not, though, since that statue is such an icon in Texas.

@Elk Snot I was kidding, but Big Tex was and is a huge part of the state's folklore. Hopefully we can get a Big Tex Jr up.
He couldve chosen to commit suicide after being witness to last weeks game. Just couldnt live with the shame maybe.

Never thought seeing a old statue burn would make me sad , but it's like a piece of my early childhood is burning up with it. I've walked by that statue so many times as a kid going to the fair I've always associated ol' Tex with good times. rip and thanks for the memories.

I live here and have never understood the palm trees surrounding Big Tex. They don't appear to be the native Sago Palm. It is Texas, after all, and there is a history of not thinking things through. Rick Perry is a good example. Anyway... It burned.

That shit happened to me when I was taking finals in college. At least the smoking head part. The CO2 fire extinguishers left freeze burns on my ears.
