A study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can
be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and
aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity". As if that
was not enough to get Republican blood boiling, the report's four
authors linked Hitler, Mussolini, Ronald Reagan and the rightwing
talkshow host, Rush Limbaugh, arguing they all suffered from the same
affliction.
All of them "preached a return to an idealised past and condoned inequality".
Republicans are demanding to know why the psychologists behind the report,
Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition, received $1.2m in
public funds for their research from the National Science Foundation and
the National Institutes of Health.
The authors also peer into the psyche of President George Bush, who
turns out to be a textbook case. The telltale signs are his preference
for moral certainty and
frequently expressed dislike of nuance.
"This intolerance of ambiguity can lead people to cling to the familiar, to arrive at
premature conclusions, and to impose simplistic cliches and
stereotypes," the authors argue in the Psychological Bulletin.
One of the psychologists behind the study, Jack Glaser, said the aversion
to shades of grey and the need for "closure" could explain the fact that
the Bush administration ignored intelligence that contradicted its
beliefs about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
The authors, presumably aware of the outrage they were likely to trigger, added a
disclaimer that their study "does not mean that conservatism is
pathological or that conservative beliefs are necessarily false".
Another author, Arie Kruglanski, of the University of Maryland, said he had
received hate mail since the article was published, but he insisted that
the study "is not critical of conservatives at all". "The variables we
talk about are general human dimensions," he said. "These are the same
dimensions that contribute to loyalty and commitment to the group.
Liberals might be less intolerant of ambiguity, but they may be less
decisive, less committed, less loyal."
But what drives the psychologists? George Will, a Washington Post columnist who has long
suffered from ingrained conservatism, noted, tartly: "The professors
have ideas; the rest of us have emanations of our psychological needs
and neuroses."

The national science foundation provided a $1.2 million grant to somebody doing a cliche psychobabble hit piece on GOP presidents? They could have downloaded the same thing from any random comment string on DailyKos for free.

Veteran psychiatrist calls liberals mentally ill
Publishes extensive study on 'Psychological Causes of Political Madness'
•creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization;
•satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation;
•augmenting primitive feelings of envy;
•rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government.

.....let's give these assertions merit and claim special rights and privileges under protection act that homosexuals or blacks enjoy! Hey, we are born conservative -it's not a choice! Fucken lame~ this "research" is obviously a steered conclusion with skewed topics of analysis. Seems that the elements of observations are from a negative perspective or biased stand point. Let us hear about the strengths and positives of a conservative approach.

I'm a Conservative, and to be perfectly honest with you, I'm an Atheist!...I'm a science freak and an overall independent person(I hate big bro/gov) I don't need a fucken babysitter and I don't want to pay for lazy druggies with no ambition(this label does not include driven people that are out of work due to the recession).

Conservatives that base their conclusions on rational thought are the only people that know how to move this country forward. Idealism and political stance based on emotions are not beneficial to anyone at all. I.E why are the prisons full of black people? It is not because the police have something against blacks as progressives would have you believe. It is because even at circa 12% of the US population, blacks commit more crime than other races. You may believe I'm racist for saying that, More..

@BigDaddyHarrison "economic policies" of late have been anything BUT conservative HELLO!!!! I'm a conservative in an economic sense! "Don't spend more than you have" - infact, spend less than you have- this is a ultra-feasible economic model. Kinda like making fuel efficient cars and for the same reason!!

The more freedom you have the less equality you have. The more equality you have the less freedom you have. The detract from each other. Nice come back with talking points though.

Too bad that this article does not convey other aspects of the study such as this one, which should be obvious to the eyes of anyone:
http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2003/07/22_politics.shtml
"The terror management feature of conservatism can be seen in post-Sept. 11 America, where many people appear to shun and even punish outsiders and those who threaten the status of cherished world views, they wrote."
You are either with them, or against them.

This is worse than when Jon Stewart spliced 37 different conservative speeches and interviews to make 3 sentences that sounded like conservatives hated the middle class and lower class. Even though not ONE of the speeches or interviews had any relevancy to Jon's topic. The fact that it was presented in a comedic fasion made everybody eat it up. People just can't see past what is put in front of them anymore.

I was just thinking isn't it about time for Obama to land on a aircraft carrier and claim victory in Libya? lmao not a single American injured or killed, amazing. Dubbya landed on the carrier while veterans were still dying. Could you imagine the blow back of Obama landing on a carrier dressed up as a member of the military. The outrage would be beyond imagination.

Anyone can produce a psychiatricization of the enemy. Leftists' have long practiced that, going from putting dissenters in asylums for the insane in the USSR, to Adorno's efforts to label authoritarian tendencies a form of mental illness. Etc. I can just as easily claim that leftism is a delusional tendency to refuse to accept the reality of differences among men, of the necessity of competition among men because of the fact of scarce resources, etc.

Is this the same government that warned us about "right wing extremist" that do terrible things like believe in the 2nd amendment, serve their country in the military, and warn that unlimited borrowing and printing of money is harmful to a country?

The intelligence assessment revealed numerous characteristics of "right wing extremists".
