He thought he could make it to those stairs until a schwack of palettes slammed into him. Agreed about the current, way too strong to try and cross that, even at hip level.
Edit: After watching again maybe the best thing for him to do would be to try and flop on top of that big palette next to him and try and ride it to somewhere safer.
I know that sounds like some wishful thinking but it's better than having his head down at crush level ;-)
