Female caretaker passes out in courtroom during $90,000 theft sentencing

Cleveland 11/8/2007
A caretaker,Marika Kalman of Solon , was in the process of being sentenced on charges she stole $90,000 from an elderly woman in her care when he fainted.
According to a news crew in the courtroom, the judge was ready to impose a two year sentence on her.

Paramedics were called to assist her. There is no word on her condition.

Prosecutors say Kalman was caring for a Solon woman and managed to obtain power of attorney for her.
Over the course of 3 years, Kalman stole $90,000 by convincing the elderly woman who had dementia to cash in bonds.

A jury convicted Kalman in September 2007 of theft. The case was prosecuted as an Elder Protection case and handled by a special unit within the prosecutor's office that deals with crimes committed against the elderly.

The sentencing could not be completed due to the interruption caused by Kalman's collapse. As a result, the sentencing has been continued to next Tuesday.
