The beating followed after a knife attack





AN off-duty police officer who saw a fight break out in Birmingham city centre bravely wrestled a knifeman to the ground.

The dispute broke out between residents of a hostel in Lionel Street, just before 5pm on Thursday. One man was stabbed in the shoulder.

The constable, who was on a rest day, was passing and intervened to tackle the armed attacker and restrain him until uniformed colleagues arrived.

Two men, aged 30 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of wounding and a 45-year-old man was taken to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.


Acting Sgt Richard Stott, from West Midlands Police CID, said: “It appears the men involved knew each other and that an argument between them quickly escalated. Several knives were recovered at the scene.
