Santa Ana Jail To House More Immigrant Detainees

The Santa Ana City Jail plans to house more immigrant detainees to increase its revenue.

Police Chief Paul Walters said 32 more beds will be added, bringing the capacity to 512 beds.

The Santa Ana Police Department is also pushing for an increase in the daily rate it receives per detainee from $82 to $87. If approved, it could bring in $1 million in annual revenue.

The move comes as the department faces a 10 percent budget cut, hiring freeze and lack of new revenue.

Local jails house immigrant detainees under an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
