Bird shot is great for home defence. It will still cause pretty serious trauma, and it doesn't penetrate through walls, which is good to avoid shooting family members.
For outdoor applications, not so much.

According to what I've read, #4 buckshot is most effective in an real world encounter inside a home (as far as shot goes). The point of shooting someone is to stop their progress thus the threat, bird shot will not do this to someone that is bent in harming you or your family.
Bird shot is only really effected at a extreme close range in which a pistol would make a far better tool. Granted someone being hit by bird shot may give up and run, but that same person is likely to run at More..

I totally agree. Shotguns are the BEST overall small game and bird weapons.
They are also absolutely devastating with buck shot at fairly close ranges and slugs out to 100 yards and a bit beyond.
The biggest hurdle with shotguns has been the number of rounds available in the weapon at one time.
There are some magazine feed shotguns that look very promising: one, the Atchisson, would be an unparalleled success if ever released to the public.
