@barogers619 I know it's a short hop to Google but you could have explained a little bit what you mean by "hydraulics". I had to do some searching before I got the info.
Here's an animation of how a hydraulic elevator works:

In French we call this assembly a "vérin". It can also work without hydraulics, with another system for pushing and extending.
In demolition the force is applied sideways to pus More..

@khamomil
What's "inefficient" about it?
All that matters is that the cost/benefit pencils out.

@Oswald2001 Digging the vérins out of the rubble every time is what I find inefficient.
However I did some more research and the system of vérins is self-retractable (this is the system patented by its inventor Dominique Ferrari). The verins retract immediately after exerting the lateral pressure so they don't get buried in the rubble after all.
Here's a link to a pdf in French that explains the different stages of preparation before the building is collapsed:

I dunno... maybe the assemly's cost is lower than the total cost of an explosive demolition with all the experts insurances and other "peripheral" costs combined.

@khamomil I'm amazed that they can be reused. I'd expect them to be at least damaged.

@deathOfHeavyD Maybe, plus the homeland security impact seems favorable. Less explosives lying around seems like a win to me. Oh, but what if some terrorist steal one of these vérins and then secretly sets it up to demolish a building full of people?
Can't win.

So I was taking my dog for a walk when suddenly I noticed a huge crowd. They told me a building demolition was to take place so I was so excited I couldn't stop shaking and all I had was my cellphone camera.
...sounds better than...
I knew about this cool demolition for weeks, but when the day finally came, I decided to forego a real video camera and tripod, and just take my 0.6 megapixel cellphone camera along... you know the one with the nifty one-button "make it even blurrier" opt More..
