The hacker group Anonymous has left a new message on YouTube, threating to shut down Facebook on November 5, 2011. They generally make good on their claims of upcoming actions..
“The medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed,” says the video.
In July, the FBI raided six homes in New York in connection with the “hacktivist” group Anonymous. Other homes throughout the country were also raided. The Justice Department stated that 21 people were arrested in connection with an attack on PayPal.
Apparently, the raids in July were not enough to silent the group, who released the new YouTube video and related press release on July 16. The attack is to protect the public’s privacy, according to the release.
“Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world,” states the press release.
“Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family,” the group continues.
The video ends with a very clear announcement: “Prepare for a day that will go down in history—November 5, 2011.”
An image of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerburg flashes on the screen near the end of the video. “We do not forgive. We do not forget,” ends the release.
The group has been credited with hacking into the Pentagon, Iran’s government e-mails, and possibly Visa, Mastercard and tech companies working for the FBI.http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hacker-group-threatens-shut-down-221445
