The death of a schoolgirl five weeks after she uploaded a video describing years of bullying has sparked shock and outrage in Canada.

Coroner Barb McLintock said on Thursday that preliminary indications suggest 15-year-old Amanda Todd killed herself.

In the nine-minute video posted on September 7 on YouTube, the British Columbia cheerleader did not speak but told her story in haunting detail in a series of handwritten notes that she held up to the camera.

She said she was lured by a stranger to expose her breasts on a webcam and the picture ended up on a Facebook page made by the stranger, to which her friends were added.

She wrote of being plunged into anxiety, depression, drugs and alcohol.

Amanda said she changed schools but an encounter with another girl's boyfriend started the bullying again, which this time escalated into a physical attack in which she said she was beaten.

When Amanda got home, she wrote, she drank bleach: "It killed me inside and I thought I actually was going to die."

She was rushed to a hospital to flush out the bleach.

More anxiety, cutting and overdosing followed, her struggles with anxiety and cutting herself got worse, and despite counselling and antidepressants, she was rushed to hospital again after an overdose.

The last cards in the video said simply: "I have nobody. I need someone. My name is Amanda Todd."

Beneath the video, Miss Todd posted a note saying she produced it not for attention, but "to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong".

"Everyone's future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I'm still here, aren't I?"

Ms McClintock said Amanda died in her home on Wednesday. Her office released no other details.

The Coquitlam Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the family is not prepared to speak publicly and have asked that their privacy be respected.

The girl's death was headline news nationally on Friday, with #RIPAmanda trending across Twitter and one Amanda Michelle Todd memorial page on Facebook garnering more than 35,000 "likes".

Shock, sadness and recriminations poured out on a Facebook page devoted to her.

British Columbia premier Christy Clark posted a video on YouTube deploring the tragedy.

Bullying "isn't a rite of passage", she said. "Bullying has to stop."

  • Whoever says bullying is apart of life and growing up, fuck you. You are part of the problem. In my high school, bullies got their ass kicked. It wasn't tolerated in any shape or form. Bullies were the people who were looked down on. Anybody who actively takes the time to torment and make the life of someone else worse for your own entertainment, I have a message for you - take a gun, go to a river, and shoot yourself. Just go fuckin shoot yourself. You'll make room for the rest of us. Seriously More..

  • The pedophile who put her on this sad road needs to be exposed. He needs to be jailed and let his fellow prisoners deal proper justice.

She had a short life, I hope in death she has peace.

    • @CanadaAlberta Good point. Now that it is exposed the police will probably be able to track down the online interactions and find the IP of the sick fuck who manipulated this poor girl. It shouldn't be hard for them either this stuff is pretty streamlined these days I hope we get some results from the police.

  • So why wont they track the facebook msg to the pos and charge him or at the very least make him public. Check out the guy who had sex with her to see if he is over 18?

Further proof FACEBOOK is going to lead more problems ....just wait and watch

    • @AxisofEvil You can't place the blame on FB. Kids are going to use whatever means possible to be cruel to each other. If not on FB, then at the local hangouts or where ever.

  • Tough crap.
She would have killed herself after growing up over real stuff like taxes, being laid off, some asshole with no insurance crashing into her car, divorce or anything.

  • The parents of the bullies should be jailed for letting their children treat another person that way, and the bullies should be put in reform school until they are adult aged, and then prison for 10 years.

I was bullied in several different schools after leaving grade school, (after 6th grade) and it was the major reason for me quiting school. I ended up in trouble for taking up for myself, and that's BS. A kid should never be disciplined for acting in self preservation.

  • A series of avoidable events caused this beautiful child to take her life.

I'm sure that she was on; one of a million, unregulated and poorly policed teen cam sites.
This is from a society that spends billions on taking down any file even remotely suspected of copyright infringement, yet, couldn't care less about the child abuse websites?

I hope we find intelligent life in our universe, because we sure could be using some of that here on Earth.

    • @elitefox about the website part, the underage girls who go there do so by themselves, usually for attention from men.

women learn around puberty that their private parts = power, so what better way to get attention than to show them on a webcam, guaranteed to turn any mans head.

as is always the case during tragic events such as this, people like you rush to blame everything under the sun except her for her actions.

    • @john_b To be fair, as a guy growing up with four younger sisters, I can say that the reason why under aged girls flock to these sites is because they are, excuse my language, dumb as fuck.
The reason why the girl isn't to blame is because the predator who perused her, couldn't settle for anything less than her downfall.

Also how many teenage girls know that there is software to record the cam feeds?
The bottom line is, a young kid has killed herself because there wasn't the proper supervision More..

  • This is a case of invasion of privacy againt which we already have plenty of laws.

Now the government will be using the memory of an unstable and suicidal girl as a pretext for legislating more control over the internet and free speech.

    Satan is gaining ground!

  • Poor girl. This is so sad.

As far as bullying goes, it does not exist only in school, which seems to be what the media tries to express. I see bullying every day of my life. Where you ask? On our roads. Many people become bullies the second they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Bullying is a serious issue that should be culled and not just in our schools.

  • Looks more like someone who couldn't fill her unsatisfiable need for attention to me. We need to start addressing the mental illnesses of the eternal victims and stop blaming it on society.

  • Where are her parents during all of this? Why are kids spending so much time on the internet, allowed to do as they please? There are some sick motherfuckers in this world and they'll use whatever means available to control, harm and destroy others.

  • Be yourself and when someone tries to tell you otherwise hand them their ass on a platter. Sad that the young lady took her own life at such a young age.

  • The problem with this insane publicity is that it almost glorifies it to other troubled teens. The huge public support and outcry. Want 500,000 likes on FB? Kill yourself. Kids kill themselves every day, its terrible, but if we over hype the shit out of it, its only gonna lead to more problems.
