Man falls into frozen pond while fleeing from police and drowns to death - New Years day 2013 - Champaign, IL
Description from the poster:
"I was spending the day with family when we spotted some police. We
initially thought someone had robbed a store but as we got closer we
spotted a man in the water. From what we were able to gather the man was
fleeing from the police. He ran over the pond and the ice broke. I was
able to capture the moment he went under. We waited there for a little
over an hour and they had not pulled him out yet.
Note: I had my police scanner app running to keep us updated on the situation. So that's what you'll hear over the video. -.-

@Eternal21 rescue services took way too long to enter that frozen lake.wether he was a criminal or not they probably did checks on him to see if he is dangerous or would fight back whilst tryin to be rescued...but they had plenty of time to save him..

Seems as tho the rescue services were frozen. Compared to other water rescues - this was clearly a weak effort and so, will probably become the subject of a lawsuit.

I cant help but notice how the video directly under this one is of firefighters saving a deer that fell into a pool of water and that their sense of urgency is twice that of the people in this life trying to save a human who fell into a frozen pool of water.

Indications are he wasn't much of an asset to our species. The deer can at least make a yummy contribution.

@travy1121 He wasn't exactly "a human who fell into a frozen pool of water" - he was a human FLEEING FROM POLICE (possible dangerous to himself and others, including the rescuers) who fell into a frozen pool of water...

@zAbArAkAtrAnEmIA_TheGreat Hey I am not saying he was a good person but I view all other humans as at least deserving of life unless they take one themselves. He could of been a kid stealing to make some money to pay for his mothers medical bills. I am not excusing his actions, but I personally feel his life is more valuable than an animals.

@commanderAA He was fleeing out of fear and you never think clearly in the situation. I am not saying he isn't stupid, but I sure as hell would have made every effort to get him out of the water instead of letting him die like that. He was a criminal yes, but he still could have been a good human being.

@Rubbernecker I think technically drowning is just getting water in your lungs. I think it's more like "hanged to death". Normally if we say you drowned or were hanged, it means you died. But you can drown or hang without dying.

@patwil Since the victim was fleeing from police maybe other reasons (e.g., waiting to be sure he wasn't dangerous any more) delayed the final phase of the rescue attempt.

"In 2009, 42-year-old Philip Surridge died after firefighters refused to rescue him from a frozen lake.
He screamed ‘Don’t let me die’, but the crew sent to Brightwell Lake, Northamptonshire, did not go in because they were not trained in water rescue.
Speaking at the inquest into his death, Mr Surridge’s mother said: ‘The fire brigade condemned my son to his death. My son was still alive [when they arrived]. Why couldn’t humanity just have taken over?’

@-SpectraL How can so many people be to totally clueless about rescue ops? Yeah, there were a bunch of people standing there; mostly people who are not trained, and certainly not equipped, for a water rescue on thin ice and in frigid waters. The rescuers, when they got there, had to make sure they were ready before they went out onto the ice or there would have been more victims. And, what you call "falling right on top of the guy" was actually them locating him under the ice and th More..

@TheWustenfuchs Well, this is only a 10 minute video, and the poster said that they waited for a little over an hour. Even though they were in their suits during this whole video, they must not have been ready. The video doesn't show what they were doing, but rescuers don't just sit on the sidelines for no reason.

For those who don't know but assume they do. Technical rescue is very time consuming. Specifically that of Ice Rescue. First you have to survey the scene and determine the best method. Simply sending a rescuer out tied to a rope will generally create more of a problem then a solution. When effecting an Ice Rescue the goal is to distribute as much weight across a broad area(enter the tube). Note that the rescuers are also laying down versus standing up. Your chances of falling through greatly inc More..
