F-4 Phantom II, FCS in the Lead Sled.

Great detailed look at the Flight Control System in the F4 Phantom.

Its interesting to see how the aircraft designers in those days got over the problems of using hydro-mechanical controls in aircraft that exceeded the speed of sound and how they dealt with the artificial feeling of such controls, using bob weights and dampers.

Even the computer in these planes is electro-mechanical and looks more like a transmission than a laptop. Nevertheless these old hydraulic techniques give the F4 many abilities that modern fighters have, even without fly-by-wire controls, they can still automatically hold pitch, roll and yaw and even auto stability, all with gears and cams attached to a gyro.

      And still one of the loudest fighters ever built in my opinion. I remember when two of them were taking off at Scott Air Force base when I was a kid out there playing little league football. They had to stop the game until the planes took off because we couldn't hear ourselves think (or hear the quarterback), and the runway was at least 1,000 or 1,500 feet away. LOL

  • AMH's would always blame us AE's with gripes written up on thier flight control systems. They'ld rather have us switch out a AFCS comp. or CADC before they would even look at the problem.

    Most of the time they were right.

  • Wow, this is cool as hell!!! I'll have to forward his link to my father-n-law. He retied from McDonnell Douglas in 2002. I think he started there in about 1965 when he got out of the Air Force. He worked on the F4, the F15, and the F18. I'll bet the portions of this video filmed outside was probably here in the St. Louis area at the old McDonnell Douglas headquarters.

  • Beautiful plane. Love the F4. Mean and beautiful. Also dig 50's control systems tech with the weird blend of mechanical,electrical,hydraulic. Digital is so cut and dry and usually perfect. Digital systems lacks the same thing the F22 seems to lack; the stench of jet fuel burping from tanks, stained pads and no dripping oil. The last pictures of the latest hangers look like there's no odor
