Dave,a broken man..
I think I can safely say that Roger will look out for him from the other side..

Very sad to see the guy struggling on his own whilst someone he probably knows very well is dying in front of him.
Somehow I found this footage more disturbing than a great deal of the bad stuff I've seen over the years.

I suppose the other guys there didn't have fire retardant gear on like the drivers and would have got close enough to help if they could. It doesn't matter how brave or bold a person is, without protection you just can't do it. Really sad footage and one that I never knew about before.

Oh my God, that was horrible. Watching him trying desperately trying to save his friend, brought tears to my eyes.

That's what hero's do. David was killed in a plane crash he was piloting in 1985, flying a Pitts Special stunt plane. R.I.P.

Useless marshals, waving their hands around ineffectively like penguins.

One of F1's darkest moments. Williamson was pretty much uninjured in the crash... just trapped. He could be heard screaming for help (to get the car flipped over & off of him..) He died from smoke asphyxiation. There was apparently a fire truck just 150 yards up track, but race officials would not allow them to back up to wreck. They made them wait 6 minutes until clearing the fire truck to drive all the way around the course. Some fans tried climbing barriers to help, but race officia More..

Definitely a brave guy but I guess he had a flameproof suit on while the marshalls appear to only have Hi viz vests as safety equipment.

I doubt that Purley was wearing fire retardant overalls. They were introduced to Formula 1 two years after this incident.
A very brave man,he was awarded the George Medal for his attempt to save Williamson's life.
