Oil Tanker Collides With Oil Rig in Gulf
CORPUS CHRISTI - Coast Guard crews are at the scene of a collision that happened this morning two miles east of the Port Aransas jetties.
Around seven this morning an oil tanker lost power and collided with an oil rig that was being towed.
A lifeboat from the oil rig was left drifting in the gulf due to the damage.
No one was injured and there are no reports of any oil leaking after the collision.

@mlivsey 2 more miles and they could have run into the ferry landings at Port Aransas. That would have been unreal.

@monkey
Supertankers don't like stopping before 2-3 miles. Turn in the route? Put your winker on becauce you're gou're going to need it in about five hours.

This type of oil rig is called a jack-up rig. It is basically a floating triangular shaped barge outfitted to be an oil rig. There are holes in the deck at each corner with cogs in them. The legs have gear teeth along the side of them so that the cogs can move them up and down. The rig is towed to the well site and the legs are then lowered down. When the legs hit the bottom of the ocean the rig is "jacked-up" off the surface of the water. Since the rig was under tow there is nothing t More..

@INDO_420 mad props on the diving job, that could be the most dangerous job there is based on deaths and injuries.
but there are methanol tanks, diesel tanks, mud tanks, etc. on the jack ups that could be breached though it seems there were not and if they were it would not be much in them compared to a tanker or a blow out, i have worked on jack ups as well. there was a jack up that had issues last year in about the same spot, almost capsized if i remember right. i hope they get it out of the More..

@monkey fcker No doubt a major fender bender. I remember two barges colliding in the Port Aransas ship canal. One of them happened to be a chemical barge and we got evacuated from the yard. You are right, there is always something to spill on board. Luckily this time it wasn't thousands of gallons of crude. Props to you as well for working offshore, that is caveman work. You don't know what hard work is until you've worked offshore.

@monkey fcker I worked at the Oceaneering International yard in Aransas Pass. We worked on the Navy frigate mine sweepers there in town. I used to get deployed off shore out of there and our Morgan City office in Louisiana.
