Missouri Police Officer Shoots Man Drugged on Meth After Being Dragged Down Road

"You shot me? You shot me! ... Oh my God."

These were the words of a man strung out on meth who dragged a Missouri state trooper alongside his car for a few dozen yards before the officer shot him twice.

The dashboard camera on Missouri Highway Patrol Corporal Cody Dunfee's patrol car was running and captured the July 2012 incident that began with a speeding violation, according to the press. The video was shown in court this week as the case wrapped up.

"As I approached the car, I noticed what appeared to be a black square object in his waistband," Dunfee said, according to press. "I kind of figured that he was trying to hide something in the car. I didn't know what it was at the time."

Dunfee said the Kansas City man, Alan Hampton, sped off so quickly that he didn't even think about why he "more or less dove into that car."

Dunfee shot Hampton in the hand and leg while being dragged.

"You shot me," Hampton said in the video. "I'm going to bleed to death. Help! Ah! I'm blacking out, man."

Investigation of the incident found Hampton had been on methamphetamines and also had a loaded gun in his possession.

He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

According to the press, Clay County Circuit Judge K. Elizabeth Davis told Hampton on Wednesday it was "a wonder that you and the officer are still alive."

"Hampton may argue that getting shot was punishment enough," Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said in court according to the Star. "Getting shot isn't punishment. Getting shot is a consequence of this stupid, dangerous and illegal behavior."
