Purple Heart lost in flood returned to Vernonia policeman
Posted by Michael Lloyd, The Oregonian on October 18, 2009 at 06:06 PM
Vernonia Police Sergeant Michael Kay lost his father's Purple Heart, received during the Vietnam War, in the flood which devastated the town in December of 2007. Nearly two years later, it was found by Corey Campbell, who was working near the Nehalem River when he uncovered the medal while clearing weeds. He saw Gilbert Kay's name engraved on the back of the medal and began looking for its owner, which led to him turning it over to Sen. Ron Wyden's office, which found its owner. The medal was returned to a grateful son Sunday.
