Taliban are winning the battle of political attrition

American and British forces have been suffering greater casualties in Afghanistan as they step up their battle against the Taliban.

The war is weighing heavily on the British public, as a new poll revealed on Tuesday. The survey was commissioned by The Independent newspaper and found that 58 percent think the war is unwinnable, and 52 percent want British forces withdrawn immediately.

  • Bullshit thread title. Winning war of political attrition my ass. Does this sound familiar: "The poll, conducted for BBC Two's Newsnight programme, indicated that 52% believe victory is impossible."?

That poll was conducted in August of 2007 asking about opinions on Iraq.

    Fail.

  • That's because America's NATO allies -- minus Brits and Canucks -- are a bunch of worthless pussies.

We need to fight these assholes like we fought the Nazis and Japs.

    Fail.

the original title was "Taliban extends authority, influence in Afghanistan"

the link to the source is provided....here's the source of the 52% figure:

Of course if you say 52% belongs to that 2007 poll because the numbers match (even though it was relating to a different country) then I can't argue with that ...

They had you on your heels in 2007 but you'd already won the war in 3 weeks.

In AfghanistNam it's been 8 years & all u have there is Kabul, Kandahar & a few outposts.

    Different terrain, different people.

They bribed the Iraqi Sunni guerilla with money, guns and "political power" not to fight any more.

That is the true face of (so called) Iraq victory ...

(Not to mention under table agreements with Iranians ...)

All the rest is merely propaganda food for the war/violence/world-domination chauvinist/right-wing junkies. (LL is their resident site btw ...)

  • I find polls about opinion on issues to be bullshit generally.

They say 1000 people responded to the question fair enough, without indicating how many couldn't be bothered to answer, and how many strongly held the opinion.

If you want the exact phrasing of the victory question. As taken from the independent article http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/voters-turn-against-war-in-afghanistan-1763227.html

"By a margin of nearly two-to-one, the public believes that the Taliban cannot be defeated militarily. Fifty-eight per cent view the war as "unwinnable", with 31 per cent disagreeing."

As you can see you use they use the term "military victory" which curiously your leader text (wherever you got it from) seems to have dropped. Which as most people are aware chances of destroying the taliban by sheer force is impossible and counterproductive.

Question phrasing, smapling, strength of feeling, % who respond, all affect poll outcome. there is no doubt that support is rightfully falling, but that is a lot to draw.

Oh, and remember that unlike during a national election, there has been no national debate on the Afghanistan war, people are appallingly badly informed, most of my friends either don't give a shit, are barely aware of it apart from the casualty headlines, or both.

That said, if anything this shows there should be mroe national debate, and that all 3 main parties not offering an immediate exit as their policy is a pretty shocking lack of choice.
