*Two Vids* - Short & Long Version
Authorities have released the name of a Woods Cross man they say led police officers on a high-speed chase through three counties and tried to swerve a vehicle to kill two of them. Benjamin Royal Pillard, 21, has been booked into Weber County Jail on two counts of attempted aggravated murder, aggravated assault, evading, driving with a measurable controlled substance, reckless driving and littering from a vehicle. His bond has been set at $36,556.
The chase began when Utah Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop a black Jaguar on U.S. 89 in Davis County. The police pursuit continued on Interstate 15 into Box Elder and Weber counties.
Several times during the pursuit, troopers terminated the chase because speeds became excessive on U.S. 89, Cpl. Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol said Monday. Twice during the chase, the Jaguar swerved and tried to hit troopers.
Also, Pillard tossed items, including backpacks, from the window of the vehicle, according to UHP.
The nearly hour long pursuit ended when a UHP trooper boxed in the Jaguar just north of the 5600 South exit on southbound Interstate 15 outside of Roy. The trooper who boxed the suspect in was treated at McKay-Dee Hospital for minor injuries. Pillard was not hurt, said Johnson.
Police retrieved the two backpacks they believe Pillard tossed from the car, but found nothing incriminating in them.
