Rep. Jose Serrano is firing a brushback pitch at the state of Arizona for passing a strict new immigration law.
Seeking Major League retribution, the Bronx Democrat will ask big-league baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to move the 2011 All-Star Game from Phoenix. Serrano will make his request to the commissioner in a letter to be sent later today.
“This anti-immigrant law is unjust, wrongheaded, mean-spirited and unconstitutional. It is important that everyone who believes in justice and our national spirit of decency speak out against this measure,” Serrano said in a statement released late Wednesday. “MLB has a very loud megaphone, and their rejection of Arizona’s action would be an important demonstration to Arizona that we do not tolerate such displays of intolerance in our nation.”
