Quoted comment by controlmonkey: That whole race was cursed. From Terry Bradshaw during the pre-race to Tony Stewart going airborne & landing on top of Bobby Labonte's car & finally 3 trying to block for a Waltrip, Jr., 3 finish. Bad day for Nascar. R.I.P. 3. You were bad-ass @ the '99 Bristol night race!
When his car hit I remember saying out loud "This is bad really bad". I race I will never forget, and to be perfectly honest.... wish I had never seen. An awesome man, lost way to soon.

Quoted comment by Rexdeus: To be honest, that crash did not look at all that bad. No big impact, more a shunt and push. Did he die of a heart attack?
I think there was a freak effect involving some safety gear that Earnhardt may have disabled for comfort that caused his neck to snap. But I'm not sure about that.

I don't think it was his neck that snapped...His seat belt failed (Modified I believe) and his face crushed against the steering wheel. It was blunt force to the face that killed him. He and his son where the only two drivers left that wore an open face helmet...had he worn a closed face helmet, he'd be alive today.
from what i heard, his seatbelt was installed incorrectly. Instead of the manufacture recomandations, he went with driver comfort. a lap belt suposadly was rubbing a edge of his seat and was weak at the time of the crash. the belt broke, hit his head on the steering wheel, and broke his neck. i think that the nat. geographic channel has a show about this...
Quoted comment by saifc4: watch this great hand grenades(rkg3) video combination in iraq all executed during 2009:

I heard a rumor that he possibly could of loosend his belts prematurely. I have read he was known on the last lap to relax a little and do that...who knows.

Clorox for the gene pool. Him, and Steve Irwin, and all the rest.
No big loss in the greater sense.
I only feel for his immediate family, and definitely not for all of the mindless Idiots who idolized him for his, and their, assininity. [sic]

Excellent tribute. Nicely edited and heartfelt music selection.
The loss of "The Intimidator" gave NASCAR racing a void that may never be filled again.
