Avalanche buries 100 soldiers at Siachen, dead bodies being retrieved
An avalanche buried over 100 Pakistani soldiers near the Siachen glacier on the border with India on Saturday, the Pakistani army spokesman said.
Several Pakistani television channels reported earlier that about 150 soldiers were trapped.
“At six o’clock this morning this avalanche hit a (military) headquarters. Over 100 soldiers and personnel are trapped,” said the spokesman, Major-General Athar Abbas, adding that rescue teams were headed to the scene.
He said the army would comment later on whether there were any casualties.
Rescuers have recovered some dead bodies of Pakistani soldiers, who were buried alive at the Siachen Glacier early Saturday, when an avalanche smashed into their camp, the military said.

On Aljazeera I read that this is the highest military camp in the world at around 8000 meters altitude and that more soldiers have died due to the weather than to combat between Indian and Paki armies.
Life must be hell up there.

@khamomil I have been to that part of the Karakoram and its hard work we were up at 6,500 meters and saw flares and heard rounds being fired of between the Pakistani and Indian troops and yes we were there with military guides and yes more soldiers have died of altitude related illness than actual combat and then theres the chinese just on the other side of that,

@anglosaxonwarlord It seems fighting over boundaries so high up in the mountains is an exercise in futility. It should be like the sea, with some zones belonging to no state in particular.
I find this part of the world fascinating, where Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, China and India are within shouting, or shooting distance. State boundaries do not take into account tribal realities nor do they accept nomadism yet there's a lot of both in these areas.

@anglosaxonwarlord In january 2010 there was a landslide in North-West Pak that blocked the flow of the Hunza river and a 25km long lake has formed behind the ruble. I have been following the developments and flown over the area many times thanks to Google Earth.
This link is to a map of the area on my channel

and you can see I have posted quite a few links to videos related to the place.

Easy to find them. They look like dog turds sitting in the snow. Up top, just look for the pull starts sticking out of the snow.
