THE VOLUENTEERS FROM NORWAY, 22 JULY 2011
Part of channel(s): 2011 Norway attacks (current event)

These are the people who tried to rescue survivors from Breivik's attack on the camp at Utøya:

"Several volunteers risked their own lives to help victims escape from Utøya in the terror attack on the youth camp there last summer. Now, ten months later, their efforts are being honored. On June 2, the Norwegian Lifesaving Society will award medals to the volunteers that helped out during the rescue efforts in the waters around Utøya last July.
Many of the volunteers are residents of Utvika, which is located on the mainland just across from the island. They took their own boats out into the water and helped rescue survivors that were escaping the terror attack.

One of the volunteers, Erik Øvergard Martinsen, recalls how they saw kids running and screaming for help on the island. They couldn’t get close enough to rescue them, but transported the ones already in the water to the mainland, where more volunteers waited to bring the victims to safety.

Several of the volunteers have struggled with the aftermath of what they experienced on July 22. It will feel good to be honored, Martinsen tells NRK. 'I have missed some sort of recognition for what we did that day,' he says.

The same day as the volunteers receive their medals, the municipality of Hole has planned an event that includes a visit to Utøya. The rest of the program has not been set yet.
