Pigeon shooting has been around longer than the USA. Skeet shooting gets it's name from pigeon trap shooting. "Clay pigeons" are what the skeet disks are called. The shooter yelling "pull!" is telling someone to pull the string on the trap, releasing the bird.
The purpose is to keep shooters well practiced so when they go duck hunting they are better shots. (no wounded ducks flying away)
