  • Manhole? hahahaha :D Well, english isn't my language, but is there such a thing as a manhole in this video? :D

  • Unlike China, people came out to help.

  • I think I see what happened... If you look at the second video (around 20 seconds in) you can see the manhole is covered by a loose metal grate. The car drove over it and the front wheels kicked the grate up into the bottom of the car. This acted like a pole vault and caused the car to flip. Also, there is nothing in this vid to suggest that it is Russian

    • @Rafterman1 You are correct. Good job. (Well, except about the location. But you've heard about that, already.) :-)

    • @drinkwhiskey Ah, ok. Possibly my bad about the location. But then - this could be my mate Urgi...

  • At 21 seconds you can clearly see that there is a thick steel mesh covering a hole to the left of the manhole. (The hole can be viewed at 16 seconds.) I would assume that just off camera a corner of this mesh is raised. On many SUVs the lower control arms have very little ground clearance near the tire. The control arm snagged the corner of the mesh and the mesh is apparently welded to the manhole cover. Simple physics then launched the vehicle into the air.

    • @davevan You nailed it. Looks like a makeshift replacement, a mesh welded to a pipe to fit the round hole, oversize because they're apparently working on the sewer with the construction so the asphalt around the ring is chipped away. Bent-up edge caught the undercarriage, looks like his tire didn't even run over the cover.

    • @davevan I've always wondered if a car can go into a pole jump if the driveshaft breaks in the front...

    • @ka50 I had and exhaust drop off in front and dig in . It threw the rear end of my 78 Ramcharger up in the air pretty good

    • @ka50 Mythbusters did a car dropping a drive shaft into a pot hole...but that was rear driven car - and all it did was hop in the air a little bit.

But what happened here is unbelievable! Imagine just cruisin' down the road when boom you're flipped over! She-at!

    • @Punky Rooster & davevan Yep, I would agree the tire didn't run over the cover. The mesh can be seen snagged to the undercarriage as the car flips, rolls and then it falls away. A definite WTF moment

  • Wow first time i see this kind of accident, could not believe that was a sewer hole to send that SUV flying. Holy shit!

  • In Russia, manhole bang you.

  • If you look closely it seems there was some kind of steel grating over the manhole that pops up and is strong enough to dig in and catch the underside of the fan.
You would think it would just rip a hole in the bottome rather then flip the entire thing over like that.
Image the shock of this driver... on a flat road, suddenly your upside down without ever sensing an impending collision. Wow,

  • Wow, looks like the grate they loosely placed over the hole caught the undercarriage. Pretty incredible. It sure doesn't look like the wheel dropped in the hole.

Absolutely right! It was some kind of semi permanent solution over that manhole. I guess theft of these iron manhole lits are a problem in Russia too. Happy to see the guy was alright but it must have been a surprise out of nothing.

And some other thing: what are the odds that such an inccredible thing is perfectly registred on two camera's?

  • at 20 sec you can see the lid is missing ,replaced with rebar welded to the manhole casing. probably stolen for the metal recycle value. The liability is the city's for the poor fix.

  • Two cameras happen to catch an exploding manhole cover on a section of street with no other cars and the cameras are pointed in the right direction of travel and the manhole happens to be one that has those "protective" features that prevent it from being a missile when an explosion does occur AND the trailing car with a camera parks over the hole that just detonated to cover anything you might see in said hole?

    Verdict: Totally real.
