Lightning Strike.
A cool Lightning strike I filmed during the storm on 7/1/11 in Portage, IN. I added a frame by frame sequence at the end. It took 45 frames to complete the strike. There are a couple of dramatic frames in the sequence. Notice in the second frame how it sends out the "Feelers" all around until it finds a "connector" to strike. Very cool.

Very interesting. I assume the flashes at the bottom are reflections in the lens?

@downhill2400 Possibly...but maybe more to do with the "rolling shutter" process used in digital cameras. Same thing that makes airplane propellers look like detached floating boomerangs.

They are called "leader", and rise up from ground based objects, to make the connection. Once a path is established, you can frequently have multiple strikes, down the same path to ground. It will happen in nano seconds, and may not be seen by the naked eye.
Very cool indeed. Many times during storms, if you are lucky, you will see failed leaders come up from the ground, but if you do, you might be the leader that succeeds, not a safe place to be.
