Wife of former German President files ‘defamation lawsuit’ against Google over ‘prostitute’ search result

Bettina Wulff, the wife of the former German President Christian
Wulff, has sued web giant Google in a legal action to stop rumours about
her private life.
Wulff, in her defamation lawsuit against Google, claimed that
when the name Bettina Wulff is typed into Google's search engine, it
suggested search terms included the words "prostitute" and "red light
district".
Wulff has denied that she has ever worked as a prostitute.
However, Google said that the auto-generated text reflects what others are already searching for online, the BBC reports.
Wulff has spent over two years fighting allegations she was once employed as an escort, a German newspaper noted.
“Her lawyers have already issued 34 successful cease-and-desist
orders, including one against a prominent German television personality
this weekend,” the paper said.
The same paper said a defamation suit was launched against Google last week.
Head of PR for Google Germany, Kay Oberbeck, said the site's
search terms were "algorithmically generated" and "include the
popularity of the entered search terms".
"All terms that appear have been previously entered by Google users," he added in a statement.

    • @azat
she isnt and never was. Thats the point.

Fact remains, just because this is the way the google algorythims work doesnt mean it has to be right.

Just assume you would be labeled a murderer and then the charges get dropped. Would you like your future employers to always see the "murder" entry first when researching your background? I doubt it.

  • That's the price of fame.
Now she just made it even more prevalent by pushing the issue. I never even heard of her, so I Googled "Bettina Wulff" and came up with even newer results.

  • The lady does have a case against Google which is storing and correlating offensive language toward her, and presenting it as search suggestions to other people. This is not the same as just providing search results.

Don't forget that Google already sensors lots of information, for instance due to copyright infringement claims.

    • @72_virgins_no_more

Google is aleady being evil by deciding to censor terms and sites it arbitrarily deems people aught not to be able to see. You are a moron to support an expansion of such censorship, especially when this case only involves someone's inflated ego being hurt.
