Two golden retrievers that were trapped in the woods on Cape Cod for two weeks were reunited with their owner after one of the dogs broke free and helped her track his four-legged brother.
The pups, four-year-old Baxter and six-year-old Bailey, were tied together in front of their home in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on September 26 when they somehow got loose and took off into the woods.
The dogs' owner, Penny Blackwell, was inconsolable. She put up fliers in the area and took to Facebook, posting a plea asking anyone who might have seen her pets to contact her.
Brothers: The two golden retrievers spent two weeks trapped in the woods on Cape Cod before Baxter got free
Missing: The pets' worried owner put up fliers and posted a plea on Facebook begging friends and neighbors to let her know if they find her dogs
Despite her efforts, however, two weeks went by without any news of the pooches.
Just as Blackwell was ready to give up hope of ever finding her pets, she received a text message from a friend telling her that one of the dogs may have been found.
Baxter, the younger of the two pups, was picked up by a family who saw Blackwell's Facebook post after he was spotted wandering around their home. But that was not the end of the story.: the pooch still had to help his owner track down his missing sibling.
Blackwell took Baxter to the area where he had been found, and the four-year-old retriever did his breed proud by leading the owner through a brush directly to the a spot where Bailey was still trapped.
'Baxter kind of led me off the side through the woods. I had twigs in my eyes and leaves in my hair,' the owner told CBS Boston.
The great escape: The two pets were tied with a double leash (pictured) outside their home when they somehow got loose and took off
Wilderness: Baxter and Bailey ran into the woods and got tangled in the bushes by their leash
Blackwell said the pooch was tangled up in his leash that wrapped around some bushes.
'I could hardly get him untied because he was jumping on me and jumping on Baxter because he was so happy to see us,' the overjoyed Blackwell recalled.
The owner believes that her two pets spent most of the two weeks trapped together in the brush until Baxter managed to free himself. According to Blackwell, the pooch kept going back into the woods to check up on his older sibling.
'Baxter's a hero for taking me there,' Blackwell said.
Back together: Baxter and Bailey were reunited this week in their Sandwich, Massachusetts, home
Back in action: The two pets lost a few pounds off their 80-pound frames during their adventure, but are otherwise in good spirits
Brave: Blackwell called Baxter a hero or helping her track his brother and for checking up on him during the two weeks
Both pups lost eight to 10 of their 80lbs following their adventure, but were otherwise in good health.
A few days after being reunited with their owner, Baxter and Bailey were still hungry, but quickly making up for lost weight with frequent feedings.
On Monday, Penny Blackwell shared the exciting news of her pets' return with her Facebook friends:
'BEST NEWS EVER!!! Both dogs are now home safe and sound! Baxter led me to Bailey where he was tangled up in the woods. Needless to say he was very happy to see us! Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and support.'

we once had a Corgi when i was a young fella and when we moved into the city we had him for a short time but my father said the city wasnt a place for him as he had always roamed a farm so sadly we found another home for him about 20 kms away. The new owners rung us about 5 days later to tell us that our corgi had dissapeared....About another 3 days after that he was sitting on our porch when we got home from shopping....How the hell he found us we will never know but man was a touching moment. More..

Cool story bro but how did it end? Did you all keep him again or return him back? I would have kept him at that point

@Sasnz, Same here. We had a bird dog mix that broke his hind leg. We couldn't afford the cost of fixing his leg at the time. Putting such a good family dog down because of lack of funds was not unacceptable. Luckily the vet found a veterinary school miles away that was willing to adopt him, heal him and find him a new home. 14 months later he returned to our area and found our children playing in the babysitters yard. The sitters property was miles away from our home.
When it comes to dogs the More..

@Blklight No mate we gave him back to the people on the farm...The dog was a farm dog even tho he was a corgi, he was born and breed on it and to confine him to our little yard in the city just wasnt fair on him...was hard to say goodbye but we knew it was for the best so that made it a little easier.

And now Baxter and Bailey go back to being tied to the front of their house. I really wish people wouldn't tie their dogs up outside.

Retrievers were never lost. They broke free for a reason and went into the wood probably looking for food.

More dogs that run away to certain death instead of staying at home where people feed them and care for them.

@Texan_in_China
Probably were chasing a small animal as dogs are known to do from time to time. Can't blame the dogs for being dogs.

@Texan_in_China Just like every other creature on Earth, did not want to be tied up and held prisoner. If you can't properly keep a dog, you probably shouldn't have them.

@matspur32 They are good hard working dogs as well! But just a bit too energetic. I've hunted with them, and they are great dogs! They have pointed many a bird for me! BAM! And they bring it to my feet and ask nothing in return but an ear rub and an "atta boy" It's their job!
