Mr. Obama knows exactly what car he wants to buy as his post-presidential ride -- a plug-in Chevrolet Volt. “Five years from now when I’m not president anymore, I’ll buy one and drive it myself,” Obama promised 1,600 auto workers at a United Auto Workers union event in Detroit on Tuesday.

Reports are out that the U.S. Department of Defense will buy as many as 1,500 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrids from General Motors, and some folks are already in a tizzy about it. The New American reported that the Pentagon will buy the extended-range plug-ins in order to cut its carbon footprint and save on refueling costs in the process.
Fox News followed up by noting that the purchase would be "the latest controversy in the Volt's short life" because the Volts would be purchased "at taxpayer expense." Fox also cited a recent Reuters report saying that GM was losing almost $50,000 for each Volt sold and that sales have been "moribund."

I thought they were going to discontinue the Volt?! So we threw too much into it, both GM and tax payers, and their idea to keep it around is to have the government buy them? Just shut down the line and make it another Chevy Cruise assembly line, since a Volt is just a modified Cruise.

@joe prole Haha of course he is, I started off my career years ago working at Volkswagen. If anything is in the news it is used as a sales pitch. Truth is the Volt is the biggest flop. It is overpriced and still doesn't cover the cost to build the damn thing. They are literally being given away at $40k plus the tax deduction plus the Chevy rebate PLUS the fact they can return the damn car to Chevy if they don't like it. Bad deal all around, especially for the tax payers who made the car.

The Volt is a beautiful car.. and concept.. all electric until the battery runs out (35 miles or so).. THEN switches to gas to charge up the battery and keep you from getting stranded and THEN switches back to electric.
