Police Station Attacked With Fireworks And Molotov Cocktails In Turkey.

Raw : A large crowd attacked a police station in the southern province of Mersin with Molotov cocktails, rocks and fireworks Sunday, Doğan news agency reported. At least one attacker was injured.

Also, two 17-year-old boys allegedly attacked the offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Saturday, Anatolia news agency reported. They were both injured as they tried to flee.

Reports from Mersin said around 400 people supporting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, gathered in front of the Siteler Police Station in the Akdeniz district of Mersin to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the PKK.

As police warned the group to disperse, the crowd attacked the station. Police fired warning shots and Ş.A., 16, among the crowd, was wounded. Police then fired tear gas into the crowd and the attackers fled into the side streets.

An unknown number of protesters were taken into custody. One bread kiosk was burned, but the fire was extinguished before causing serious damage. Some police cars and the police headquarters building suffered light damage.

‘Underage suspects not guilty, instigators are’

Meanwhile, the two 17-year-old suspects, Muzlum Timuçin and Selim Tekel, who allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the AKP offices Diyarbakır, are recovering in hospital. They were shot and injured by security guards as they attempted to flee the scene, reported Anatolia news agency on Sunday. They were taken to hospital by their families after the incident.

Adurrahman Kurt, an AKP deputy from Diyarbakır, said the young suspects were not solely responsible for the attack. He said those who had encouraged them to carry out the attack should be found and held accountable, Anatolian news agency reported.

At a press conference on Sunday, Kurt said he wanted to know if these incidents were happening because the AKP is pushing for appropriate trials for underage suspects. He said children are used in these kinds of attacks because they are underage and can escape the full penalty. Kurt also said the ongoing Ergenekon case, which is an investigation into a suspected gang that was allegedly plotting to topple the ruling government and end religious movements, might be influencing people to carry out these incidents as well.

“Despite all they have done, I wish a speedy recovery to these wounded children. The people in this region do not deserve these incidents. We have heard that some nongovernmental organizations were attacked by Molotov cocktails, too,” said Kurt
