Three WA men were killed and one man injured when a bushfire in the Boorabin National Park rapidly changed direction while their trucks were attempting to pass the blaze. Throughout the day the Great Eastern Highway had been closed intermittently between Southern Cross and Coolgardie.
Several vehicles were trapped when the weather unpredictably turned and brought the fire back towards the road 100km west of Coolgardie. Three trucks were completely decimated by the intense fire and the scene, when the media were permitted on site, was a devastating one.
Arson and forensic teams are investigating what caused the fire. It is likely there will be an inquest into the mens’ deaths.
