SLAVERY IN ISLAM

Islam institutionalized slavery. Muhammad began to take slaves after he moved to Medina, and had power. Slaves were usually taken in raids on nearby Arab tribes, or war, either through offensive or defensive actions. Islam allows the taking of slaves as "booty", or reward for fighting. This has led to numerous "jihads" by Muslim states and tribes to attack other non-Muslim groups and obtain slaves.
SLAVERY:

Muslims are told that Africans "annoy the Prophet" (Ishaq 243), have hearts "grosser than a donkey" (Surah 9:61) and that blacks should be left to die if injured, and should be denied intercession and entrance to heaven (Bukhari: Volume 4, Book 52, Number 137).

Muslim slave trade was not limited to people of certain color, ethnicity, or religion. In the early days of the Islamic state, ~ 8th and 9th centuries, most of the slaves were of Slavic Eastern European, Persian and other Caucasoid origins. Later, and toward the 18th and 19th centuries, slaves were mainly coming from East Africa

Slavery is acknowledged and regulated by Islamic law. Furthermore, Muhammed, a slave owner and slave trader:

British and French colonialism ultimately put an end to slavery in much of Africa by seizing and controlling territory and interdicting the trade at sea. America and European powers finally put an end to Muslim piracy in the 19th century.
External political, economic and military pressure, largely British, over time forced Muslim nations to ban slavery. Saudi Arabia and Yemen banned it in 1962 while Mauritania has banned it three times, the last one being in 1980. However, the covert practice of slavery continues in Saudi Arabia to this day. Some Saudis living in America have also practiced slavery on American soil.
