Bingo. He certainly started the ball rolling, with his Emancipation Proclamation. And as Union troops continued to overrun the South between 1863 and 1865, the slaves in the States covered under then in Rebellion were liberated. But Slavery was not abolished until passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in December, 1865.

@LSDforuandme I don't find anything to argue with there. BTW, all members of my family who fought in that war were in the Confederacy. They came to Texas as basically refugees. I'm sure they had some tough times but I'm glad they came.

The real question here is which slaves? Lincoln did free the slaves in the southern states that rebelled, but he did not live long enough to see slavery fully put to an end by constitutional amendment. The Emancipation Proclamation declared slaves free in the rebelling states, which could only be enforced as Union troops advanced through the South, but it did not free any slaves in Union states. Lincoln died in April, and the amendment ending slavery was not fully ratified until December.

Ole' Abe was a bit of a goose. He should have sent the slaves back to their homeland - Africa - where they could have enjoyed the freedom of that continent and have been with their relatives and friends. It is where they came from, and it is the continent they owe their (prior) success.
The alternative was to stay in a far distant land, America, and do the best they could.

That would not have worked, the slaves were captured in Africa, and enslaved there. By the way, they were caught, enslaved, and sold to whites by . . . other black Africans!
Muslims and those of different tribes from the slaves. The African blacks are entirely complicit in the slave trade; to this very day but also way back when.
There's a FACT that is all but completely suppressed these days.

@BunkerGearGal I'm aware that it was Arabs and Africans who enslaved blacks and sold them around the world, and were utterly savage in rounding them up (murders, rapes etc.). But, some Africans prefer to ignore that part of their history - conveniently.

Send the Irish back or force guns in their hands. Send the Japanese back or put them in camps. African Americans could care less what you people think of them because you'll probably hate them either way, I personally don't have that mindset but I understand where they're coming from.
