A Jihadi video tutorial on making IEDs and in particular - I think - an explosively formed penetrator (EFP)

Now the BEEF has a long and varied career that at one stage included advanced shotfiring. So although I'm not current, nor do I speak Arabic, I'll guide you through what I think is happening.

The first bit is how to remove the fuse cover from a standard artillery round. In normal practice the fuse cover is removed using the correct tool shortly before firing and a proper fuse inserted.

Complaint #1 is the use of long-nose pliers. You can easily slip and cut yourself like that :-)

The next bit is to drill the nose so the main charge powder can be poured out. No problem. That shit won't go off no matter how hard you hit it or heat it. You need a proper detonator/booster to get a result.

Now having got some explosive material we see some amazing piece that looks like it's an old shell casing (perhaps some steel tube and a baseplate?). At the front we see some sort of rough deep cone made out of epoxy?? Who knows. But even if it's covering the most advanced precision metal penetrator form it's the wrong shape. It's probably good for a contact hit, but at any range it will be useless.

Complaint #2 wrong pre-form for EFP see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_formed_penetrator

The rest of the video shows how the rear of the weapon is packed full of HE and a detonator stuffed in one side and held in place by non sticky tape!

Complaint #3 The detonator is not symmetric to the penetrator.

The key to a good EFP is that the explosion is symmetric around the axis of the penetrator. Sort of a mini version of an implosion nuclear weapon.

Not so here! Any penetrator it formed will fly off at a wild angle to the axis of the weapon.

Complaint #4 holding it together with unsticky tape is a joke. Cleaning the surface and using 2 minute araldite would produce something actually useful. Not so here.

  • a failed Russian missile falling on civilians getting hacked to put at the right place , good job .

  • any good european man watching such shoddy construction methods is probably disgusted beyond words.

  • Guess they've never heard of a funnel. For being smart enough to make this they sure seem dumb as pop rocks.

  • Gotta love Syrian Duct tape.

This bozo is an amateur from day one - oh well he will probably blow himself up.

  • Here's a fun game. Watch the video and see if you can spot any item that these cave-nazis have the knowledge/technology to create for themselves without help from the non-Islamic world.

I see 1) Furniture, and 2) woven cloth.

The pliers don't count, they're precision machined and have rubber grips. I don't really see much else. The paper on the table maybe? Their sandals are composite materials, so, no...

Take away infidel contributions, and these people would be fighting with clubs and throw More..

  • This idiot was lucky he didn't blow himself up while using the drill. Despite what is written above it is possible the force of the drill against the steel of the shell can start the explosive. Even a static discharge can start it. That is the reason why EOD experts handle explosive material with care and respect.

    • @globetrotter79

With most high explosives you can set fire to them without detonation. In fact it's a preferred method of destruction.

Static discharge and radio emissions relate to wired detonators - not present here.

In reality it's really fucking hard to detonate HE - and so by design. You need really good detonators and/or booster charges to make it happen.

The only exception I know of is Ammonium Nitrate which requires specific containment and a lot of heat to detonate.

    • @DEADBEEF Yes, you can burn most explosives without a detonation. But this doesn't mean the force of a detonator can't be applied by other means. That is the reason why most explosives are tested by the drop weight test:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_of_Insensitivity
And a friction insensitivity of 353 Newton (TNT) doesn't mean this explosive can't be started if it is trapped between a drill and steel. Somebody I know lost both hands and an eye when he opened a WW2 grenade with a drill.

    • @globetrotter79

That depends on the grenade composition and whether there is a still a detonator in the grenade.

I know at one stage a variety of WWII German grenades were filled with TATP - which for certain doesn't follow the normal HE rules.

    • @DEADBEEF Damn good post BEEF. I just made a note-to-self 'never ever challenge BEEF on explosives'. :)

    • @DEADBEEF The abbreviation "HE" doesn't classify the sensitivity of an explosive but the speed of detonation. "HE" means the explosive detonates faster than sound. And I very much doubt the Germans ever filled their grenades with TATP. This would cause involuntary explosions while handling and firing these grenades. The Germans used mainly TNT in their grenades.

  • why do all that work he could use the tank shell it self , yep use pink tape next time so camouflage better. ied making vid for dummies.
