An interesting fact that I remember (from a civil war book) was that Lincoln was the 1st top commander in near real-time contact with his armies. Telegraph cable was strung as fast as possible, where ever land and railways could be held. The author I read claimed Lincoln was the 1st prez to be in very close contact with the front line field commanders.
That one stuck in my head and seems interesting.

Lincoln was anti-slavery throughout his political career.
Emancipation was, indeed, meant to undermine the South, but the assertion that that was its only purpose (I'm not sure that's what you mean to suggest) is not logically supportable.
