Yeah that sucks. Our system can use a lot of work but for the most part I'm glad we don't have to pay.

Declaring bankruptcy because of medical bills especially when it's no fault of your own doesn't seem like what bankruptcy should be for.

But then I don't even know if in the US when you declare bankruptcy if that would include wiping out medical debt as well.

  • Oh, the drinking driver is rarely hurt, it's the innocent victims in the other vehicles, or on foot, who pay. The drunk usually feels sorry for themself and no one else.

If you drink and drive you're a fucking criminal. If you kill someone you should be charged with Capital Murder.

    • @Pratt I'm wondering: Don't the US have something my dictionary calls "casualty insurance"? Here it's obligatory for every driver to have one and they usually cover 6-10 million Euros of damage/bills per person injured.

It's not guaranteed that the people driving really have them if they are driving without license, but every "normal" driver has it and it would cover the bills without need for Obamacare.

I don't know if she's brain-dead and there is no chance for any recovery for her. If this is true, she probably should not be supported anymore, and her organs might help other people survive.
But this decision should be made based on her medical status, not on her or her family's ability to pay the bills.
The bills grew to $6mln in not more than 6 months. It is possible for a person who will ultimately regain some health to be under very expensive core for so long.

There is insurance against "bodily injury liability" in the US as well, but I doubt anyone carries it in the amount of >6 million.

And don't tell me about inefficiency, having 15 or 20% of population uninsured, the US spends twice as much (in %GDP per capita) on health care than any other country.
