Because there's a massive USAF base a couple of islands away and the last thing they want is a Commie listening post there. Also, if Japan gives in then China will feel further justified to hammer Tibetans, Uighurs and just about everyone else they border.

When I was stationed in Okinawa(20% of the island is made up of US Military bases) in 2008 our base was shut down because there was a protest of 100,000 calling for the US to leave. It was peaceful and they eventually succeeded because we're shutting down most of our bases there and moving to Guam and Australia, and there isn't shit in Guam.
