Elections Canada probing 'robocalls' complaints

Elections Canada has confirmed it has launched an investigation into
so-called "robocalls" used during the 2011 federal election after
receiving a high volume of complaints.

The agency has received more than 31,000 contacts after MPs and
political parties called on the public in recent weeks to send it
information regarding the recorded messages, it said in release Friday.

The volume of responses is so high Elections Canada said it has the
authority to call in additional resources such as the RCMP, the release
stated.

Elections Canada typically doesn't confirm or deny a complaint or
ongoing investigations unless it meets a certain criteria, such as the
"need to maintain public confidence in the fairness of an electoral
process" as set out in the Canada Elections Act.

The agency will provide a report to Parliament, but didn't set a deadline.

  • The way the Conservatives are handling this makes it look like they have something to hide and probably do. Everyone involved needs jail time, no matter how high up it goes. Although I'm sure if Harper had any say in it he kept himself insulated enough for plausible deniability I presume.

    Given the fact that it's the conservatives being implicated this should immediately taken out of the hands of parliament and given to the RCMP.

  • I find it hard not to giggle when I hear the federal liberal party trying to create a scandal against the conservatives. It must have something to do with the Chretien liberal government we suffered through for most of the late 1990's and mid-2000's. Talk about scandal!
