(Telegraph) Italian firefighters have imploded the bell tower of a church in the town of Poggio Renatico after it had become unsafe following two earthquakes in the area.

Fire fighters and demolition experts fixed explosive charges around the tower of the San Michele Abbey in order to bring it down with little risk of damage to the church or surrounding buildings.

The teams then retreated a safe distance before detonating the explosives. Video recorded by the Italian fire service shows, from various angles, the moment of the detonation and the tower dramatically disappearing in a cloud of dust.

Residents of the town, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, were hoping to prop up the tower of the abbey, built in 1907, but the continuing aftershocks convinced firefighters to knock it down.

More damage to Poggio Renatico was caused by the first earthquake on 20 May, but the second tremor on 29 May was the final straw for the tower.
